Man to Man, Gal to Gal…dat Wrong: an Analysis of How Sexual Prejudice Is Reflected in Jamaican Popular Music.Mahalia Jackman - 2022 - Human Rights Review 23 (2):221-239.
This research analyses sexual prejudice in sixteen dancehall and reggae songs—two musical genres indigenous to Jamaica. The analysis provides us with insights on the lenses through which some Jamaicans view same-sex relationships and how sexual prejudice is normalised and justified. In this sample of songs, homosexuality is presented as (1) a violation of gendered norms, (2) sinful, (3) unnatural, (4) a threat to society and (5) a foreign lifestyle. The presentation of homosexuality as a foreign lifestyle suggests that antigay prejudice (...)

The Idea of the Good in John Dewey and Aristotle.Gregory M. Fahey - 2002 - Essays in Philosophy 3 (2):201-226.
John Dewey looks to the Nicomachean Ethics of Aristotle for the general outlines of his ethical thought. In his 1932 Ethics, he describes the ethical framework that he shares with Aristotle in terms of knowledge, choice and character: "The formula was well stated by Aristotle. The doer of the moral deed must have a certain 'state of mind' in doing it. First, he must know what he is doing; secondly, he must choose it, and choose it for itself, and thirdly, (...)

    Democracy and the political unconscious (review).Gregory M. Fahey - 2011 - Education and Culture 27 (1):65-68.
In Democracy and the Political Unconscious, Noëlle McAfee analyzes social pathologies that have arisen in the United States since September 11, 2001. In particular, she argues that we have been suffering society-wide repetition compulsions and time collapses, compelling us to experience the trauma repeatedly, and we have been acting out in ways that continue the cycle of suffering. She also presents a prescription for how we might work through these issues more democratically and fruitfully using deliberative talking cures. McAfee's application (...)

    Reductionism and the neuron doctrine: A metaphysical fix of gold & Stoljar's trivial–radical distinction.James Fahey & Michael Zenzen - 1999 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 22 (5):835-836.
The trivial neuron doctrine (TND) holds that psychology merely depends on neurobiology. The radical neuron doctrine (RND) goes further and claims that psychology is superfluous in that neuroscience can “replace it.” Popular among RND notions of “replacement” is “reduction,” and in our commentary we challenge Gold & Stoljar (G&S) to make clear their distinction between merely depends on (TND) and is reducible to (RND). G&S give us a TND–RND distinction that is a distinction without a difference; a defensible TND–RND distinction (...)

    A Transgressive Global Research Imagination.Jane Kenway & Johannah Fahey - 2009 - Thesis Eleven 96 (1):109-127.
In this article we explore the ways in which the notion of the imagination might be mobilized to support researchers to develop transgressive research imaginations and communities with the capacities to think, 'be' and 'become' differently in a world of research increasingly governed by rampant reductionist rationality. To assist us we draw from the evocative views of imagination developed by Cornelius Castoriadis, the imagination's most radical exponent. In this article his ideas about knowledge and its links to the imagination will (...)

Transformation of the Doctor–Patient Relationship: Big Data, Accountable Care, and Predictive Health Analytics.Seuli Bose Brill, Karen O. Moss & Laura Prater - 2019 - HEC Forum 31 (4):261-282.
The medical profession is steeped in traditions that guide its practice. These traditions were developed to preserve the well-being of patients. Transformations in science, technology, and society, while maintaining a self-governance structure that drives the goal of care provision, have remained hallmarks of the profession. The purpose of this paper is to examine ethical challenges in health care as it relates to Big Data, Accountable Care Organizations, and Health Care Predictive Analytics using the principles of biomedical ethics laid out by (...)

Culture and Organizational Climate: Nurses' Insights Into Their Relationship With Physicians.David Cruise Malloy, Thomas Hadjistavropoulos, Elizabeth Fahey McCarthy, Robin J. Evans, Dwight H. Zakus, Illyeok Park, Yongho Lee & Jaime Williams - 2009 - Nursing Ethics 16 (6):719-733.
Within any organization (e.g. a hospital or clinic) the perception of the way things operate may vary dramatically as a function of one’s location in the organizational hierarchy as well as one’s professional discipline. Interorganizational variability depends on organizational coherence, safety, and stability. In this four-nation (Canada, Ireland, Australia, and Korea) qualitative study of 42 nurses, we explored their perception of how ethical decisions are made, the nurses’ hospital role, and the extent to which their voices were heard. These nurses (...)

"O'Meara masterfully situates Pryzwara in relation to the traditional and contemporary theological, philosophical, ecclesial, cultural, and social contexts within which he wrote." --_William P. Loewe, professor of religious studies, Catholic University of America_ Erich Przywara, S.J. is one of the important Catholic intellectuals of the twentieth century. Yet, in the English-speaking world Przywara remains largely unknown. Few of his sixty books or six hundred articles have been translated. In this engaging new book, Thomas O'Meara offers a comprehensive study of the (...)

Perceptions of the effectiveness of ethical guidelines: an international study of physicians. [REVIEW]D. C. Malloy, P. Sevigny, T. Hadjistavropoulos, M. Jeyaraj, E. Fahey McCarthy, M. Murakami, S. Paholpak, Y. Lee & I. Park - 2009 - Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy 12 (4):373-383.
The intent of ethics is to establish a set of standards that will provide a framework to modify, regulate, and possibly enhance moral behaviour. Eleven focus groups were conducted with physicians from six culturally distinct countries to explore their perception of formalized, written ethical guidelines (i.e., codes of ethics, credos, value and mission statements) that attempt to direct their ethical practice. Six themes emerged from the data: lack of awareness, no impact, marginal impact, other codes or value statements supersede, personal (...)

ABSTRACT Although Kairos in Greek mythology is often depicted as the winged son of Zeus who grants to those who lay hold of his single lock of hair their once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, in traditional African American culture, particularly when it comes to speech, Kairos is essentially family. Given how much African American speakers depend on seizing the moment to invoke spiritual connections, emit laughter, and profess the truth, Kairos, or what we might call CPT (“Colored People’s Time”), can be summoned almost (...)

    Public Anatomies in Fin - de - Siècle Vienna.Tatjana Buklijas - 2010 - Medicine Studies 2 (1):71-92.
Anatomical exhibitions, online atlases and televised dissections have recently attracted much attention and raised questions concerning the status of and the authority over the human body, the purpose of anatomical education within and outside medical schools and the methods of teaching in the digital age. I propose that for understanding the current public views of anatomy, we need to gain insight into their historical development. This article focuses on anatomies accessible to non-medical audiences in the capital of the Habsburg Empire, (...)
